In thanksgiving for a life well lived, the family of Rev. Paul J. Riley, announces the death of their brother and uncle, January 7, 2015 at Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John, NB. Father Riley was born in Charlottetown, PEI, the son of the late Frank and Margaret (Dalton) Riley. He was educated in local schools, attending St. Thomas University before pursuing theological studies at St. Paul University, Ottawa. He was ordained to the priesthood by Most. Rev. Arthur J. Gilbert on May 13, 1982.
Father Riley was first assigned Associate Pastor to St Mary’s Parish, Newcastle, NB for the summer of 1982. His first full-time assignment came in the fall of 1982 when he was appointed Associate Pastor at St. Ann’s Parish, Saint John, NB. In July of 1986, he was Pastor at Sts. Simon and Jude Parish, Nackawic and Administrator of St. Agnes Parish, Debec. In November 1986, he was Associate Pastor of St. Michael’s Basilica, Chatham, NB. In June 1987, he was Associate Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Saint John, NB. In August 1989, he was appointed Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul, Oromocto, NB with missions of St. Bridget’s and St. Columba. In 1996, Father Riley was appointed Pastor at St. Michael’s Basilica in Miramichi, NB where he undertook major renovations to both the exterior and interior of the basilica church. He was also Administrator of St. Margaret’s Parish, St. Margaret’s in July 1996. In July 1999, he was appointed Pastor at St. Anthony’s Parish, Fredericton North. In July 2000, he was Pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish, Diocese of Charlottetown PEI. Father Riley was Pastor in July 2001 at Holy Rosary Parish, St. Stephen, NB, and St. Stephen’s Parish, Milltown. From 2007-2010 he was also Pastor of St. Joachim’s Parish, Saint John, NB. From 2007- present, he was Pastor of St. Ann’s , Saint John, NB.
Father Paul also served the Diocese of Saint John in various other capacities including; Member of the Council of Priests, Member of the College of Consultors, Member of the Priests’ Personnel Board, Member of the Diocesan Finance Council, Chaplain to the Knights of Columbus and Chaplain to the Police Force of the City of Saint John.
Father Riley was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Myrtle (Everett) Folkins in 2012. He is survived by his two older siblings, Shirley Gallant of Summerside, PEI and John (Stella) Riley of Saint John, NB as well as his nieces and nephews; Theresa (Milton) Goggin, Vicki (Darrell) Campbell, Jeffrey Folkins, Murray Folkins, Russell Gallant, Rosemary Gallant, Kimberly Gallant, Bernice Gallant, Kevin Riley, Kelly Riley, Kirk Riley and great grand nieces and nephews.
Resting at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 135 Simpson Drive, Saint John, NB on Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM, with Evening Prayer at 6:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 91 Waterloo Street, Saint John, NB on Monday, January 12, 2015 at 12:05 PM.
Interment will take place immediately after the funeral service at the Rural Cemetery in Hampton, NB. Family and friends are invited to a reception at St. Ann’s Church Hall, 135 Simpson Drive, Saint John immediately following the funeral mass.
